Google Maps - Set up instructions for non-watermarked maps

Postby admin » Tue Aug 21, 2018 2:28 pm

Google recently changed their terms of use policy for API mapping use, dropping the number of free map API use by 30x times, increasing pay fee for overuse by 1400%, and instituting a "development only" watermark for software that uses the API without an API key such as the ST3 Windows app. To accommodate these changes we have updated the ST3 app to allow users to enter their registered map API key to remove the Google Maps watermark.

What this means for you:

If you want to continue using Google Maps in ST3 without a watermark you need to take the following steps:

1. Update your ST3 software to the latest release v3.1.6807 here: Download ST3 Updates
2. Register with Google for a API key following the steps here: Get API Key, be sure to get a key for "Maps JavaScript Api"
3. Once you receive your API key, enter the key into the ST3 app under the Settings > Google Maps > API Key box.
4. Restart the app, you now have non-watermarked Google Maps.

The new Google Maps terms allow up to 25,000 map uses per month for free, which should accommodate the needs of any ST3 user... unless they don't have a job or something and spend all their time looking at ST3 workouts. KEEP YOUR API KEY PRIVATE AND DO NOT GIVE IT TO ANYONE. Allowing someone else to access your key could result in API usage abuse, overage charges, or blocking by Google. If you believe your API key has been stolen, you can use the Google Maps API management website to create a new one. You may also want to set API limits to ensure your monthly use is under the free tier. You can do all this in the Google API console web site, or read these instructions to Manage Your Cost of Use and set your usage limits.

Wow, that is a lot of work. I really don't want to do all that. What are my options?

1. Continue to use the Google Maps option in the development only watermarked mode. API access rate limiting for software without an API key seems to work off IP address ranges and a daily use count. If you access the software in the morning, or live in an area without a lot of other maps users, you may not notice this at all.

2. Switch to Open Street Maps. Install the plugin here: ST3 Open Street Map Plugin to access 5 different types of background maps from thunderforest.com. You will need an API key to unlock the non-watermarked maps from thunderforest as well; the process is explained in the plugin page.

Google Maps works without an APi key for me most of the time. Do I still have to install the software update ?

I'd appreciate some more detailed information, please, as following the instructions didn't work. First of all, I was given a choice of three products to select: do I need just "maps" or all three. Secondly, after going through the steps of creating a project, I was not given the option to set up a billing account (I had no accounts on Google maps): I was just taken back to the first screen. Finally, it appears that you can't set a billing limit of $0.00, you have to set a usage limit instead.

Updated instructions. Its "Maps JavaScript API" the one you want. Enter the API key into ST3 and if it works you got the right one.

OSM street data exceeds even Google Maps in some places, but due to Google's size and ambition to partner with satellite and airplane ground imagery companies as well as negotiating content deals for maps, they are second to none and it's no wonder they are changing to a fee model as all this infrastructure can't be cheap.

OSM street data is indeed often better than Google, but it doesn't have the satellite imagery which I think is more useful. The latest OSM plugin also seems to require registration and an API key (can't see why since it's supposed to be "open"), but the old one still works fine.

The "open" in Open Street Map has always referred to the content and licensing restrictions of the actual data itself. It has never meant you could use their data storage and compute resources either for free or anonymously. You can (and should) read their terms of service.

I don't doubt that, but version 3.1.4403 of the plugin had no requirement for API keys; it's just the latest release that does, and they seem to relate to specific map styles provided by thunderforest.com, not to the basic OSM ones. {Edit] That may only be half right: the old version now seems to require API keys for OpenCycleMap but not for Mapnik or Hike&Bike; Osmarender (whatever that was) doesn't seem to load at all.
