Garmin Swim - Double Pauses between Intervals

Garmin Swim - Double Pauses between Intervals

Postby EricN » Sat Jul 06, 2013 12:33 am

Just got a Garmin Swim and played with it a little today. Tonight I installed the Pool Swimming plugin to check it out.

On this one session, all I did was swim (or should I say attempt to swim) a 4 x 25 with a 30 second pause between 25's. So I pressed START on the watch and swam to the other side, immediately pressing PAUSE. Wait for my 30 seconds, press PAUSE and start swimming.

Looking in Garmin Connect the charts look as I expected, with a single pause between intervals.

Looking at the swim in the Pool Swimming plugin, there appears to be an extra pause with 0 seconds. Is this normal? Is this operator error?

This is strange. Looking at the same swim this morning, now only interval 1 has an extra pause. :?:

Makes the top graph kind of screwy as it doesn't show the pauses. Do you have the Rest Timer enabled?

Mine does the same thing and it started after an update by OMB. I never reported it because it doesn't seem to affect anything that is relavent to the workout.

Could one/some of you please zip and attach one of the affected .FIT files (original .FIT file from your Garmin device, not .FITLOG file!).
How did you import that file: with ST's native importer or Garmin FIT Devices plugin?

Cheers,

Here are a couple short ones, which show a double pause below in the table, and omit a pause up above in the chart. These were imported from a Garmin Swim using your Garmin FIT Devices plugin.

Thanks for the test data.
Yep, I understand what's going on. Let's try to explain.

With the upcome of pool swimming devices Garmin has added a certain ambiguity to the recorded data:
There are "pauses" (as in older devices, when you press the pause button) and "rest lengths" (periods, when the devices detects that you're not moving in the pool).
Instead of treating these in one consistent way, Garmin stores both in two different ways.

Your example .FIT file has 2 consecutive pauses, on of each kind. You can see the "pause", when you switch to detail page "Paused", provided by Garmin FIT Devices plugin.

Garmin Connect fixes this ambiguity by combining the two into one.
The PS plugin does not.
Why? The plugin lets you edit your pool swimming session in many ways. This editing would have been much more difficult to build, if the PS plugin would automatically combine the pauses.
GC goes the easy way and doesn't let you edit, so it bypasses the potential cliffs.

To make it short: it's a feature, not a bug

Would it be relatively painless to add an edit option to Join these pauses manually? Or manually delete the 0:00 pauses?

Neither one - because internally it would mean to join two items from disjoint "buckets". If it were easy, I would already have built it.

This is too bad. Being able to delete them manually was my last hope.

Just out of curiosity, looking at my two PS images above, why do some of the 0:00 pauses 'disappear' after restarting ST? This seems to happen quite frequently for me.

I'm curious why you would even care that there are two pauses or that sometimes there is only one?

At the top of the PS plugin, the bar graph won't display the pause time correctly if a double pause is shown in the table below. What happens is the bar graph will include this paused time into the preceding interval. Distorting the workout depiction on the graph.

Plus, I'm borderline OCD, and things like this drive me crazy.

Was holding off upgrading the firmware of my Garmin Swim to 3.6, since most things worked pretty good.

Then I noticed this in the 3.6 release notes:
- Significant improvements made to stroke type identification accuracy across all paces
- Fixed issues with zero-second active and rest lengths
- Improved transition from rest to active swimming
- Added the display of session distance to the drill page
- Fixed session distance update in custom training page
- Added option to disable stroke type identification so stroke type is not shown on the watch or on Garmin Connect

Maybe this will 'correct' the bar graph on the PS plug-in? Going to update now.

I don't think so (having 3.6 on my watch).
Doesn't bother me too much (not being an OCD :)

That's too bad.

I'm OK now with the double pauses showing up in the list, as I can turn the display off for them. I just wish they would show up in the bar chart correctly.

There should be 30 sec. pause between intervals in the image below.

I guess this plug-in works 'mostly' for the Garmin Swim. Still better than base ST program and WAY better than what I can actually swim myself.

Does "borderline OCD" incur a risk for me that you show up at my home and try to "physically persuade" me to fix that issue?
