Using manually entered values explained

This section explains handling and effects of manually entered values

Question:

What are "manually entered values", where can I find them, what effects do they have?

Answer:

1) SportTracks allows to enter some values (total time, averages, maximum values etc.) manually. Some reasons for this might be:
- You want to take over some values calculated within the device without alteration.
- You feel the values calculated by SportTracks are not correct and want to save modified values you think are more accurate.
- You have a device that does not allow a digital export of data, but you still want to log your trainings in SportTracks, so you transfer the summary values manually.

2) Manual entering of values is available in the Daily Activity view, in all available windows/sections of the lower, left part (Summary, Splits, Speed, Elevation, Workout, Cadence, Power). Location is "Data: ", with calculator icon, in the upper right corner.
3) An analogous feature is available also for Energy (="calories"), alone in the Summary window/section. See also the calories FAQ.

4) To manually enter time, averages etc., mouse left click the calculator icon, then choose "Use manually entered values". Important: as mentioned in 2), you can select "manual calculation" in several windows/sections, however, this will be set so in ALL windows/sections, since it is a generic trigger which applies to the hole activity.
5) The icon will change from a calculator to a pencil. Now some fields change from greyed out to white, these can be edited/overwritten.

6) By default (after having imported an activity), SportTracks calculates all values on its own (if a GPS track is available), the activity will be set to "use calculated values".
7) Exception is Energy (="calories"), this field is prefilled with the value delivered by the device (if available).

8 ) Prefilling: When changing from "calculated" to "manual", few fields will be prefilled with values which were calculated WITHIN the device. This depends from the "Importer" of SportTracks (SportTracks has different importers(="pieces of code") for different devices). See below for device/brand specific notes. Other fields are still prefilled with the values calculated by SportTracks.
Nevertheless, ALL "whitened" fields still can be edited/overwritten, regardless of their type of prefilling.

9) Reversibility: Once you have edited/overwritten available fields, you can switch back to calculated values by SportTracks. Your once manually entered values are kept "in memory"; if you change to manual values again, they will reappear (until you change them).
Behaviour of the energy (="calories") field is different: as mentioned, by default it takes over the values from the device. Once you click the calculator 3), SportTracks calculates its own value, the value from the device is lost.

"Manual calculation" in splits/laps
Some more words are necessary to describe the behaviour of "manual entries" in the splits view.

10) In the daily activity view, choose Splits view with mouse left click.

11) Now choose between "calculated values" and "manually entered values" with mouse left click.

12) Select the wished lap with mouse left click, it will be highlighted. Now you can edit it, mouse left click the corresponding pencil icon.

13) An "edit lap details" window will open. Now you can edit/overwrite some values. The "whitened", editable fields depend from you previous selection in 11). Mouse left click "OK" to apply.

14) "Overall" effect of manually entered values
The edited values you enter/choose will be the "VALID" ones now. They appear in lists and summaries, and will be used for further calculations (sums, average of averages etc.) in the Activity Reports and Daily Activity views.
Using "manually entered values" applies ONLY to the selected activity, this is not a setting affecting the whole logbook.

Note: in graphs/charts, manually entered values have almost NO effect; SportTracks in the graphs will almost exclusively continue to display own calculated values. Few exceptions can be found in the Activity Reports chart, where such editable fields (like average heartrate) are displayed according to the manual values on level of single activity.
When selecting a hole graph in the Daily Activity view, averages, total time etc. are displayed by SportTracks according to its own calculation, they will be different from you manually entered values.

Question:

Device/brand specific notes?

Answer:

Garmin:
When downloading/importing a record from a Garmin device, these will be the fields which are prefilled with values calculated WITHIN the device, when you use "Use manually entered values":
For the summary: Start time, time, distance, energy (="calories").
For the splits view ("laps"), if there is a GPS track: marking of active/rest laps.
For the splits view ("laps"), if there is NO GPS track (treadmill/trainer): time of each lap, marking of active/rest laps.
