Activity time differs between SportTracks and device

Postby gerhard » Sun Oct 12, 2008 4:39 pm

This section explains why the time in SportTracks may differ from the time on the device

Question:

Why is the activity time in SportTracks different from my activity time on the device?

Answer:

ST displays the GPS track time (if it exists). The device displays the start and stop time. This is normally similar, but for instance Garmin devices may not store GPS location at the start and stop time, so the device and ST time can differ by a few seconds. ST will therefore show the time corresponding to the recorded GPS track. If there was no GPS reception at the start or end location, the difference can be bigger.

Workaround:

You can get ST sow the time (and distance) on the device for the total activity on the Summary page by changing the calculator icon on the right side corner to a pen. This will not change appearance in charts etc.

It is possible to get ST behaving like the device by inserting GPS locations at the start/end time so the GPS track matches the time track.
See ExtendGPSTrack in MiscPlugin http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTr ... .php?id=66
You may have to edit the start and/or end location if the estimation is incorrect.

Question:

Why is the activity time incorrect when I use pause or auto-pause for some newer Garmin devices?
Why do I have a "ghost lap" with additional time?

Short answer:

This is a bug/inconsistency in the Garmin devices with ANT-agent or mass storage interfaces like Garmin Edge 705 and Garmin Forerunner 405/310.

Long answer:

The .tcx files the devices create are formatted differently than for other devices, so the time for pauses cannot be determined.
Some info here: http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTr ... 3779#28923

In older firmwares (at least including 2.40 for Garmin Edge 705) the devices did not record auto pauses at all to the .tcx file (recording continues as normal). The lap time (and distance) is updated correctly. Garmin Training Center (and likely Garmin Connect) will only use the summary information and will therefore display the activity in the same way as the device. The activity time seen by ST that exceeds the time the device reports will be put in an extra lap ("ghost lap") with 0 distance.

This bug exists in all firmware and is not dependent on the ST version.

Workaround:

The workaround (before Garmin fixes the bug) is the following:
* Deactivate "Include Stopped in time & distance totals" in Settings -> Analysis
* Set the Stopped Time for the Category (Select View -> Categories) so the activity time matches the device

An alternative workaround is to use MiscPlugin to insert pauses. instruction

Note also that in SportTracks releases prior to 2.0.3170 (September 2008), ST would insert pauses between laps, so activities with multiple laps could be too short. This is now fixed.
forum

To fix activities that already have been imported, export a .fitlog file, edit it by removing paused time (close to the end of the file), then import as a new activity.
