How to use the Calorie Functions

Postby clackerz » Wed Sep 24, 2008 5:09 pm

This section explains the functions and options used to calculate the Calorie expenditure in your Activity.

Question:

How does the Calorie field work?:

Answer:

By importing from a Device or File that contains Calorie information, or manually entering the data, or by using the calculation button:

The calories field will prefill from the import values, whenever they are available - eg. from the Forerunner series, Edge series or a .hrm file that contains calorie data.

Also you may overwrite this with manually entered values.

The calculate button will re-calculate based on the calorie calculation formula you have set in the Category Section - Cycling, Running/Walking, Swiming, Kayaking etc.

Some devices have a more accurate formula using heart rate to calculate calories. This includes many Polar devices and Garmin 405CX. Most other devices uses a formula based on the same set of data as SportTracks.

These built-in formulas use a combination of time/speed/distance and the weight you have entered under "Athlete Details" in the settings. It is at best an estimate.

This is the reason you get a different number when you click the button - the difference in Garmin's calorie formula, vs SportTracks.
If you are using a device with accurate calculation, you probably want to use the device data. Similarly, if you use a sport without "native" support like inline or kayaking for basic devices, you probably want to use SportTracks. For other devices, it depends. Most Garmin Forerunner and Edge users that use the device for Cycling/Running, seem to prefer the device calculation and do normally not need to click the calculate button - only for manually entered workouts.
Note that early Garmin Forerunner/Edge firmware used ascent/decent to calculate calories which gave inflated values. At that time, using calculate gave much better estimations.

Question:

How do I auto-calculate my Calorie Data?

Answer:

By selecting the calculator next to the Calorie feild :

The calculate button will re-calculate based on the calorie calculation formula you've set in the Category Section - either Cycling or Running/Walking etc.

These are based on built-in formulas that use a combination of time/speed/distance and the weight you have entered under "Athlete Details" in the settings.

Note: These are at best an estimate.

Question:

How do I change my Calorie calculation settings?

Answer:

By changing the selection in the Activity Category Settings :

The calculate button will re-calculate based on the calorie calculation formula you've set in the category - either Cycling or Running/Walking etc.

You find these by going to the Activity Category Section under Select View> Categories.

Highlight (select) 'Activity Categories and under the Category Details section there is a selectable field:
Calorie Calculation.

Here you can choose from several different types of activities that SportTracks will use to calculate your calorie expendature.

These built-in formulas use a combination of time/speed/distance and the weight you have entered under "Athlete Details" in the settings.

Note: These are esitmated calculations

Question:

Why is the calculator 'greyed out'?

Answer:

Because the Activity Category being used has the Calorie Calculation set to 'Manual Entry' :

If the Calorie calculation setting is set to 'Manual Entry' then the calculator is not required - thus 'greyed out'.

Either you have created an Activity in a category that has been set for manual entry, or you need to change the category's settings.

See the previous post on how to change the settings
