Possible causes:
* Corrupt or bad copy of ST3. Try uninstall using Control Panel (neutral for you Logbooks, etc). Then download and install new copy from ZoneFive.
* Corrupt or bad install of .net - search web for .net utilities to check.
* Bad computer memory - if overclocked then disable overclocking! Run a system memory test e.g. MemTest

Might be a good idea to do a system backup as well as backup your logbook to external media.

I also noticed quite a lot of plugins. Whenever you encounter an unusual bug like this the first step should be to disable all your plugins except the system ones (Settings > Plugins), then restart the app.

Disabled all but the plugins starting with SportTracks. No help.
Disabled all the plugins. No help.

Uninstalled SportTracks from ControlPanel and download from the web site Setup_SportTracks_3.1.5681.exe. Installed it. It automatically found the logbook and settings. No help.

The computer is not overclocked, and i have no trouble what so ever with anything else. The computer is up to date from Windows update.

.net framework setup verification checked out ok for my version .net 4.5.2.

I have not yet done the MemTest86.

I did a bit of research, there is some indication this is related to a recently introduced in a Windows 7 update.

You can find a hotfix for this below:

Ok, i will check out this hotfix.

In the meantime i have run MemTest86 v.6.1.0 for over 6 hours, and it did not report any error.

It seems like the hotfix proposed is quite old from 2009 and applies to older .NET versions, as i have win7 and .NET v.4.5.2?

An interesting note could be that the error only occurs when i try to add characters in the Notes area, and not when i delete characters.
If i delete a character and try to add it again, the program also fails.

I had no trouble adding to Notes either on Import or at Daily Activity with a just added cycling activity.

You say "characters", is this just normal text or is this special characters (e.g. Alt+numeric combinations or other language)?

When did the problem start? Just after any upgrade to ST or ST Plugins? After a Win7 upgrade? After any other program install or upgrade? Have you recently changed video hardware or software?

You might need to do a virus and other malware scan of your computer.

I am using Win7/64PRO with all current MS crucial updates, current ST3 and many current ST Plugins with a very large Logbook. (System is an i7/930 with 12Gb on a P6X58D with Radeon6850 (so not the most recent stuff)).

Ignore my hotfix advice. It was linked from a support ticket at Microsoft's website, posted in the last week, but obviously the tech didn't know what he was doing.

@texmurphy;

By "character", i mean just a single space or period triggers the error.
Just activate the Notes area and press space, and the error occurs.

I have a 20MB logbook, and 69MB Fitlog export and 96MB GPX export.

No recent update of ST or ST Plugins.
No change of software or hardware, or install/upgrade.

But, as far as i can see i updated windows yesterday, the same day the error occured. But i don't remember if the error occured before or after the windows update.

My system is also getting older;
AMD Phenom II X6 Black Edition 1100T with 16GB Ram and Nvidia GeForce GTX580 from 2011 i believe.

I've used the online sync plugin for a week or so, so it shouldn't be that.

Tried to uninstall the Microsoft Windows updates, no help.

In the error details, posted above, it refers to .NET Framework v2, could it be an old issue?
Code: Select all
mscorlib
    Assembly Version: 2.0.0.0
    Win32 Version: 2.0.50727.5485 (Win7SP1GDR.050727-5400)
    CodeBase: file:///C:/Windows/Microsoft.NET/Framework/v2.0.50727/mscorlib.dll

There is also several refereces in the error details to;
Code: Select all
    Assembly Version: 2.0.0.0
    Win32 Version: 2.0.50727.5491 (Win7SP1GDR.050727-5400)
    CodeBase: file:///C:/Windows/assembly/GAC_MSIL/...

Which i cannot find in the explorer? Well i can see C:/Windows/assembly/, but not the GAC_MSIL, but maybe i'm not supposed to?

The v.2.0.50727 repeats itself.

Hi,
I got the exact same problem the same day. And I also updated windows 7 this day. I tried to uninstall the updates, it didn't help. I tried system restore, but the restore failed. Did you try this? Anyway Sporttracks is not usable with this error so we need to find a fix soon..

No, i didn't try system restore.
No usable restore point available.

I also hope for a solution/fix as i am using the Notes on every activity.

An idea about this:
When MS started pushing Win10 on Win7 users, they released Update KB3035583 and KB2952664 to put the Win10 Upgrade on the system tray. MS also changed Win Updates to automatically do Recommended Updates as well as Critical Updates.
Several Recommended Updates to Win7 include changes to Language Packs.

Are you using any additional Language Pack stuff?

I intended to continue with Win7 for now and did not want to see the Win10 thingy. So I had rolled back those Win10 Updates and turned OFF the automatic install of Recommended Updates. That keeps the Win10 advertisement off my computer.

About 11 August MS released a .Net Security Update, Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64 (KB3072305). This was a rather large Update which took a long time to complete. Check your Update History (Win Control Panel) to verify it completed successfully.

I do not know if this helps or is even related to your problems. Often upgrades to Video drivers can mess memory - so you might want to check video drivers. I would suspect possible hardware problems.
On an older system check power supply voltages (should be within 10% of nominal), verify disk drives, clean out the case and fans of dust, check cpu temps, etc.
HWMonitor from CPUID is nice. http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

I'm having exactly the same problem following a Windows 7 update. I can't edit or create any content in the Notes box. Everything else works fine, but when I try to do anything (other than delete existing characters) in Notes, I get the same error message as the others in this thread.
Any ideas?

Oddly, I've just discovered that you can copy and paste new content into the Notes box. It's kind of inconvenient, but it's a temporary solution...

It would be great to have a permanent fix.

To me it smells like a new "feature" of .NET, which crept into one of the latest Windows updates.
I wouldn't know what any of the ST core or plugin developers could do to analyze or help.
Maybe it's part of Microsoft's "lets-gently-talk-people-into-Windows-10" marketing campaign :twisted:

@texmurphy;
Every windows update has completed successfully. Also the .NET Framework 3.5.1.
I'm using english language pack.
Regarding video drivers, Nvidia recently pushed v355.60, which i'm using.
Hardware checked and cleaned and seems ok.

@Rich Woodruff;
I can confirm that the copy/paste method works for me too. :thumbsup:

Nice system.
Suspicious on your video driver. I suggest you roll back to a prior version. For older cards, risk of problems increase with new drivers. Unless you really need the driver (e.g. specific gaming purpose), tried and true can be the best.

I have the exact same problem. Cannot add anything in Notes (copy old stuff works - but that's... old stuff). I'm on Win7 recently updated. This is a Sporttracks killer for me. ST is virtually useless as it now.
