Use File Import in ST3.
Open the Garmin from My Computer and navigate to the Activities directory. Use the .fit from there. Or better yet, copy the .fit to a directory on your system. Immediate backup of raw data. Also the Edge 500 tends to slow down the Reset/Save when it fills with activities.

Hi Andrea,

Garmin supports the Edge 500 as a virtual hard-drive, you import your ".FIT" files from them -directly-

This is the direction Garmin is going for all new devices. The import is fast, and direct - no going through the communicator plugin, no additional software. Definitely an improvement.

Friendly or not, I suppose that is a matter of opinion. Confused

You should use the file import, it's handy because ST remembers the last opened folder so next time you just needt to click the needed file. It's about 3 times faster than device import and at least it doesn't use the buggy garmin communicator plugin (sooner or later you will expierience some problems with it).
I would take as well the second hint into account, sounds like you never lost any data and always had a fast system running. But when your edge chrashes the first time caused by too much history files you might change your thinking. Just would like to mention it's not necessary to clear it after each activity just every 2 to 4 weeks is OK to prevent problems.

Iasked this question because both GC and GTC use the communicator plug-in to download and upload data to the 500 Embarassed

GTC doesn't use the Communicator plugin.

Aaron, have you tried using the Communicator plugin's "file import" feature? It might not be as fast, but it would be less confusing to the end user.

I just got my Edge 500 today (to replace my 3-year-old Edge 305 with the flaky power/data connector) and tried it out.

Then I went to import the data, and of course I had the same problem: no Garmin 500 in the list of devices.

I logged in here and found this thread, and tried the file-import. It works fine. This is the procedure:

    - Under the tasks menu, click on Import.
    - Click on the folder icon just to the right of the pathname box.
    - Browse to "My Computer", then "Garmin Edge 500 (F:)", then "F:\Garmin\Activities".
    - Select the file with the name matching the date and time you started recording your activity on your Garmin.
    - Click on "Next"

From now on, when I click on the Import task, it will automatically be open to the F:\Garmin\Activities folder, and the filenames will be there if the device is plugged in.

The .fit extension is not listed within the in ST2 import feature but it is within ST3

If you are using ST2 then import the .tcx that can be saved/exported locally from Garmin TC

If you are not finding the .fit when using ST3, then check you are using the latest version of ST3 and/or the SportTracks Garmin GPS Plugin.

If you are doing tcx import of Edge 500 to ST2, then you should rename the extension to tcx2 before import.
