|
I recently purchased one of the new Imac's and have been anxious to get Sporttracks working on the Mac.
I know that a port to Cocoa/Carbon would be an enormous undertaking from the current .Net code base so I'm not asking for anything as difficult as that.
Instead, I've been trying to come up with an approach that will enable me to run Sporttracks under Parallels.
As the Forerunner 305 is not yet supported (it is recognized by the operating system but communication with the device is blocked somehow), I thought a workaround might be possible.
My working approach is to use the functional Motionbased Mac agent to upload the workouts to Motionbased, export as a Garmin .hst file and save the file to a shared space on Parallels where I can share it with the instance of XP.
I'm considering writing a small C++ program to read directly from the Garmin device (using their SDK to figure out the communication with the Garmin) and drop the file automatically into Parallels.
Is there some existing source in Sporttracks that you might be able to share to make exporting to a .hst file (or some other sporttracks compatible format) easier? |

I've done a bit of research now and am fairly close to finishing up a small Mac application (written in applescript and perl) that will download the data from the USB Garmin devices, allow you to select which runs to include in the file that gets output, and then save the file to a shared Parallels directory.
This leverages the motionbased agent that does all the reading from the device and puts an interface wrapper around it.
Even if Garmin does produce a Mac version of training center, I don't think it will come close to Sporttracks!! |

| I'm very interested in you program to pull the data from and Forerunner and put it in the shared Parallels folder. I'm ready to ditch Bootcamp since the only reason I'm using it is for USB support. Anything you can release yet? Thanks |

| Garmin released the Training Center for Mac OS X yesterday. And as someone predicted, it does not come any close to SportTracks. Now the pressure is on to release SportTracks for Mac! |

| I downloaded Training Center and agree -- it's no where near what SportTracks is -- we need SportTracks for the Mac! Any information on whether this is in the works? |

mono is probably the way to go, then also Linux (and most *nixes) would be supported. (Linux support is what I want.)
There may not be too many changes required to ST. As ST is closed source, Aaron must be applying the changes. (It is almost impossible to enhance Mono without having the the target source available.) He must be convinced that the job is worthwhile.
mono supports .NET 1.x right now, so it may take a while until ST2 can be used. |

I do not own a Mac, but I have been told using the VMware Fusion product it works great:

The folks at fredcast mentioned this when they did the review. |

just wanted to let you know the latest Parallels Desktop (Buil 3188, I think they call it V2.5) works with Garmin Edge 305.
I guess using Mono as a .NET replacement would not work, since we need the Garmin USB driver software. |

I also have Sporttracks working just fine....
With a Garmin Forerunner 305
Under Mac OS X 10.4.9
Using Parallels (Build 3188)
Microsoft .Net version 1.1
and Garmin USB Drivers Ver. 2.2.1
Plus I copied my SportTracks History file across from my PC and it all work great...this makes me very happy |

I've also got SportTracks working on my macbook pro with Parallels. Build 3188 must have fixed something.
I'm also very happy now! |

| I have recently just switched to the mac side of the force & am loving using parallels and sporttracks. The only thing I keep forgetting to do is select the device in the USB list so that it becomes activated in the "XP world" |

Just switched to Mac. Installed Parallels (and Windows) and Sporttracks. I can get SportTracks to load, but cannot open the logbook (neither the new empty one nor the logbook with all my data that I transfered over).
This is what I get:
Invalid URI: The hostname could not be parsed.
at System.Uri.CreateThis(String uri, Boolean dontEscape, UriKind uriKind)
at System.Uri..ctor(String uriString, UriKind uriKind)
at System.Xml.XmlResolver.ResolveUri(Uri baseUri, String relativeUri)
at System.Xml.XmlUrlResolver.ResolveUri(Uri baseUri, String relativeUri)
at System.Xml.XmlTextReaderImpl..ctor(String url, XmlNameTable nt)
at System.Xml.XmlDocument.Load(String filename)
at ZoneFiveSoftware.SportTracks.IO.LogbookIO.Open(String filename, IJobMonitor monitor, JobResults& results)

ST runs well under VMWare: I use an XP VM under an XP host as a "test" environment. Although I've not yet taken my VM to the Mac Fusion world information from those that have taken many other VM applications to Mac Fusion indicate the portability to be flawless.
Bottom line: ST should work under Mac Fusion using an XP VM. _________________ DCH |

it was odd. it worked depending on where the logbook file was. as long as it was on my thumb drive it was fine; as soon as I loaded it onto the machine, SportTracks couldn't read it.
eventually I managed to save it on the right spot on the virtual machine and SportTracks could read. (what's the right spot and why, I have no idea.) _________________ "I can't understand why people are frightened by new ideas. I'm frightened of old ones." -- John Cage |

Did you change the pointer in SportTracks Settings, Data Files? I've had no problems with file locations as I do often change the location so that I can port the file on to a thumdrive when I want to go away and use a laptop.

sorry to bump such an old thread
But I'm having the same problem swinter had.
The logbook will open from a usb drive, but it will not open when I copy it over to my desktop.
Where/how did you save it that you got it to work, swinter?
very old... |

I don't remember; but, looking at my directory, I think they have to be stored under Parallels in the Local Disk C drive under My Documents in your user profile.
Let me know if that works.
(Occasionally -- but rarely -- I still get a bad load still. In that case, I have to shut down windows, log out of Parallels and reboot Windows. That always works. But, again, it doesn't happen very often.) _________________ "I can't understand why people are frightened by new ideas. I'm frightened of old ones." -- John Cage |

Thanks.
After much fiddling, it will open properly as long as the file is saved in the main c: folder.
Won't work in the c:/my documents folder (or desktop, etc.)
Just a quirk of running it in parallels I guess. |

well looks like I spoke too soon
I keep getting errors for an unhandled exception followed by the program crashing
(it also oddly has some errors in the equipment page, and clicking on the shoes to fix them results in the error immediately)
The error also occurs in some instances such as saving.
(however the file will also apparently open when saved in z: which is the shared folder between the mac & virtual machine)
hmmmm |
