Suggestion - Carry splits into courses?

Hi,

First off great plugin (and Sport Tracks aswell.)

I've been working away with my Garmin Edge 800 trying to find a way to get it tuned for my training. I have done a training ride adding in lap points at the points on the route where I want them. If I create a course from this on my device, I can set the device to "auto lap by position" and it will automatically start lapping when it hits my pre-set lap point from the previous training ride.

I wanted to take this further so discovered sport tracks. I was able to edit a previous activity to move my split points (which are the lap positions on the Garmin) to exactly where I wanted them, then use another plugin to export the activity as a tcx file. From there I could import this activity into Garmin's Training Center and the output a course for my device. It worked reasonably well, apart from some of the lap positions being out from where I wanted them, but I am hoping that was finger trouble.

However when I was out on the bike I noticed another problem I didn't bank on. I had turned on the Data Field "Time to Next" hoping it would pick out my next lap point but it only showed me the time to the end of the course. After a bit of digging I discovered I needed to add waypoints (or course points as they are called in garmin's manual,) and that's how I discovered this plug in. I played around last night and I was able to add waypoints roughly at the same positions as my split points, and generate a course from this plugin from that. I haven't yet been able to try it properly but I think from a quick look that it will pick up the "Time to Next" as I would like. Using this plug in is a far better way of doing it all..

However, I noticed that the course now only has 1 lap. I.e. unlike when creating a course from an activity in Garmin's Training Center, with this plug in you loose the lap information. I will go round that course possibly tomorrow adding in all the lap markers again and then from there I can re-create a course that should have waypoints and splits in it, however it did make me think of a suggestion for the plugin:

1. Ability to generate courses from an activity (or even from scratch?) that contains the split (or lap) information in it to allow for auto lap marking.
2. Ability to "auto generate" waypoints based on split points in an activity such that they can then be added to a course.

I'm seriously considering purchasing this plug in as it is, I will keep trying it for the next couple of weeks, but if those things were in the plugin, then it would be hard to resist! :)

Cheers.

Did you see that the W&C plugin provides an action to automatically create course points at waypoints (named "Add waypoints to course")?
That could help you.

Automatically adding split positions as course points is a very good suggestion. Will consider this for the next plugin version.

Hi,

Yeh that was the approach I took. I loaded in a history, created waypoints within the Sport Tracks software at the locations that my splits were at, and then did "add waypoint to course" from within the plugin.

I have a further update. I went out and did the ride last friday with everything working reasonably well, in that my waypoints ensured my "time to next" was roughly right while I still had "lap time" so I could keep tabs on how I was doing compared to my course for various splits in the course. Weather favoured me with the wind behind and I was keen and excited about this all so I put down a decent ride.

On monday I decided to "race" against myself from friday so I created a course from my history on friday (just using the device) but it decided to strip out all the waypoints. It keeps the split positions from the history, which allows me to use the "auto-lap by position" so I don't have to push the lap button, but I no longer have the benefit of "time to next" datafield counting me to my next split points.

A suggestion for the plugin would be to "add waypoints from split points" and "add split points from waypoints" when you are importing an activity into a course. This would allow a user to do the following:

1. Set up a course using your plugin, adding waypoints and defining splits based on it.
2. Enable "Auto lap by position" on your device.
3. Go out for a ride with the device providing good feedback of how you are doing compared to your splits whilst recording all your lap points.
4. Record a new PB and want to use it as your new baseline course.
5. Create a new course from existing activity using your plugin which pulls in the split points recorded in the activity and makes them waypoints on that course, aswell as recording the split points.
6. Go out again with your new course.
7. If you wanted to move your course points around at any point, you could turn off "auto lap by position" and manually add your new lap points in and then go back to 5.

I'm an engineer so I know some things are easier said than done but I just thought i'd throw it out there, as it would really make the plug-in a powerful training tool. Not only would it make easy to "re-create" your course when you have a new PB to race against, but it would ensure your split point and waypoints are in the exact same location so your "Time to next" and "Lap Time" would be bang on. I had some discrepancies between the waypoints and split points on the courses I created due the nature of a mouse click being less accurate than a piece of code.

Cheers,

Alan.

I had a look at how to build this and decided NOT to add this to the plugin.
The combination of
1. changing speed during course creation
2. allowing the user to create a course from just a selected part of an activity and
3. allowing the user to append this to an existing course
makes it a very very complex task to determine the correct positions for course points derived from split locations
