Plug-in concept: Gear Indicater

Postby 7270martin » Fri Apr 09, 2010 1:34 am

One futher wish for your great plugin:

I would find it useful to have the table of the standard elevation view combined with your gear information. I.E. I would like to know what average gear (apart to avg cadence/speed/power) I used at a specific grade level, e.g. average gear for grades from 1-4 %, 4-8 % etc.
The grade levels should be the same as the standard levels of ST (definited in ST settings). Climb Analyzer, part of Training plugin, also provides such a table based on standard grade ranges, but without gear information.

I like your actual table very much. I know that it can be sorted also by average grade per gear which would provides similar information. When using my MTB, I have 27 gears which makes it a long list to look through.
Average gear per grade range (e.g. 1-4, 4-8, 8-12) would probably give a better readable overview, especially when comparing the results to other activities.

May be you could add this additional table to the existing one (with the possibility to switch from one table to the other by the icon at the top-right of the table)?

Ooooh - wish I'd spotted this a few days ago.

I've just played with similar things on runsat - http://www.runsaturday.com/Talk/g/posts/t/1358

I see the code is on http://code.google.com/p/stgearchart/ on GNU Lesser License - which I think I understand (it's pretty permissive)

Is it OK if I take it a see what I can build online too - I'm thinking that it might be interesting to try to compare different people's approaches to the same climb, could be especially interesting if they've got power data too.

Don't expect too much too soon - I'm a bit snowed under at the moment!

Thanks :D

I'm OK with it. Let me know if you find any ways to improve the algorithm.

Thanks mechgt

Looking at the code, I think our algorithms are the same up to the point where:
- you smooth the data
- you guess the gear ratio based on best match

I think I'm going to try adding:
- smoothing the data
- then guessing the gear ratio based on a combination of best match and what was there last - using the heuristics "most of the time you don't change gear", and "you don't normally change both front and back at the same time"

It's certainly an interesting area to play! If Shimano want to give me some electronic gearing then maybe I can compare results with reality :)

Now all I have to do is find the time to do this!

Thanks again :)

Plus of course there's the rule that you shouldn't really ever be going small-to-small or large-to-large.

(Not that I'm staying up past midnight thinking about these things!)

OK - finishing for the night now - it is 1am!

I've looked at the algorithm using some triple test data - that extra ring makes it much harder to analyse than a double.

Some things I've experimented with are:
1. putting smoothing (moving average) in before the ratio detection
2. removing that, and then instead putting some smoothing logic on after the ratio detection

That second approach seemed quite good to me - but I need to work on the logic some more (maybe next weekend!) - I'd also like to look at other smoothing algorithms - at noise removal rather than at averaging.

All this done in javascript so far - very quick to prototype but also very quickly gets very messy!

Thanks again for the brain food!

No problem, glad you can interpret it well and found it useful.

I thought about adding some of the filters you mentioned (not swapping 2 gears simultaneously, etc) but haven't gotten around to it. You'll have to let me know how toe results of your tests come out. I did some tests on a trainer and simply wrote down when I shifted - ride in gear 1 for 1 minute, shift, ride in gear 2 for 1 minute, etc. That was a pretty decent way to get real world test data.

I'm not working on this today...

But in the back of my mind I am wondering what users actually want from this?

I'm wondering if:
- they really want exact gears
or
- whether they'd be happy enough knowing time or %age of time spent in different ratio bands?
or
- something else?

Interested to hear what people actually want...

Peace? Happiness? Contentment?

But more seriously...

The most valuable data might be in the form of a histogram: Indicating time / distance spent in each gear, or moving band of gears.

I did ask for that :)

That was the sort of thing I was thinking... I was wondering if I should just define a few bands - e.g. granny, intermediate , speedy - and then plot:
- a line chart of the raw data
- a stepped line chart of which of the bands people are in at each time...
- then plot a pie chart for the whole ride

Over time we could also collect stats for:
- average gear ratio
- time in each band

As that would allow people to compare different rides over the same course.

Now how many bands? 3 sounds kind of good as a default... but maybe 5 might be better... I think maybe I need to look at MTB and recumbent gearing too...

Good luck with that search for Contentment? :D

Agreed - I noticed me doing this yesterday.

One runsat user's also just posted their own analysis of some gear shifting on http://dave.tycho.ws/Charty/cadvspeed.h ... its=metric - it's an interesting view.

Still not sure quite what I'll build as an end tool...

A new version has been posted: v0.8.4. Changes are listed below:
- Lots of new stuff allowing integration with other plugins, notably Filtered Statistics
- Several bugfixes that could have caused possible crashes
- Several performance enhancements helping it load faster

Who needs instructions?

No, just kidding. I've not had opportunity to put anything like that together to be quite honest :(

Basically, install it (should show up in main plugin list on settings page), then on the Activity Detail display, select an activity that has a cadence track and either a speed/distance or gps track, and you should see something similar to what's posted here:

AH that must be it. I dont have anything that records cadence just gps track

Thanks for the help

Would be great if I click on a ratio the GPS points will appear on the map. 8)

While riding today and thinking about cassette, cable and shifter maintenance, it occurred to me that the Gear Selector Plugin could be expanded to show shift count.

The chart would have columns for shift frequency for each used gear.
Counts could be kept for chainring (front) shifts vs cassette (rear) shifts.
These counts could be stashed as custom fields in Equipment. Then they would be available to annual/lifetime reporting (e.g. Activity Documentation).

Maybe even better would be a count of shifts down into the gear and shifts up to the gear.

SportTracks 2 or SportTracks 3? (I'm assuming ST3 since you said you just started).

Can you post the error messages or maybe a screenshot of the error?

Feature suggestion for off-road biking

Postby knutio » Mon Oct 11, 2010 3:20 am

When riding off-road, some points in the trail are too difficult for biking. What are the possibilities for including non-biking time/distance in the Gear Selection? With a Cadence sensor it should be fairly simple to separate parts with Cadence= 0 and speed lower than 5-10 km/h.

This sounds like a perfect application for Filtered Statistics. The Gears plugin integrates with it as well, so you can get the gear info there also. See if this does what you're after.
