elevation data download error

Postby Pirx » Wed Sep 27, 2017 7:38 pm

For a couple of days now the plugin is unable to download (some of?) the elevation data files anymore. The message says "could not open connection to remote server", address is http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version2_1/ ... 89.hgt.zip. I can manually go to that web address using a browser and download the file myself, but I wouldn't know what to do with it anyway...
So, somehow something must have changed. OMB, can you fix this please? Thanks!

The OMB plugin which will correct/add elevation is the Waypoints and Courses Plugin.
The Elevation Correction Plugin is by pkan.
Check to be sure which plugin is causing you the problem.

Sorry, yes, that plugin is by pkan. And, yes, the issue is with the elevation correction plugin, not Waypoints and Courses. I only have the former installed, not the latter.

Dowload works for me.
But you can also add DEM manually, both SRTM and other.
For me Lantmäteriet (the national map organization) provides better quality data, but it has to be downloaded separetly.

Yep, that's exactly what I'm seeing. Funny thing is, if I type that URL in my browser it will download the file just fine.

You have a workaround at least - save the file manually.

If possible, use WireShark or something to find if this seem to be a redirect or proxy issue.
But a programatic correction will like require code changes by pkan.

You can also use omb's plugin.

Any instructions on downloading what we need manually?
Is it correct to say that this plugin is no longer being maintained?

It appears that the download problem is caused by the SRTM download website now requiring the TLS 1.2 security protocol. TLS 1.2 is supported by all modern web browsers, but it isn't supported by the .NET Framework version 3.5 that SportTracks is built with. I've found a workaround that should work on systems with .NET Framework 4.5 installed, and I will release an update to the plugin.

ST3 is using.NET2.0 but a number of plugins uses newer .NET version. So 3.5 or 4.5 should not make a difference.
ST is at least not abandoned...

I have now released a new version 1.9 of the plugin where the SRTM download should work again.
