I believe that what you want is already part of the core ST program. Go to the Splits screen and customize the List Settings or the columns.

Put the descent expression in () parentheses to avoid the two consecutive minus signs.
And put the Subtraktion into parentheses, to get it right.

ST internally uses SI units, i.e. meters for distances and elevation. If you want to see miles, feet, ... You have to convert your calculation result accordingly.

Try this and see:
((1.0*{ASCENDING}-({DESCENDING}))*3.28084)/{DISTANCE}

And you might finally change it to:
((1.0*{ASCENDING}-({DESCENDING}))*3.28084)/({DISTANCE}/1609)

When configuring your custom data field, how many decimal digits did you specify? I suppose not enough, so that the tiny value is rounded to 0.
