Anyone have an idea for using elevation, speed, distance, heart rate to calculate a difficulty/ intensity rating.

You might try the Power Runner plugin: http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/sporttr ... wer-runner

I am looking for something slightly simpler: A formula that gives me an indication of how hard a running route was, taking into account just the distance and the hilliness of the route. I know that the “Course Score” plugin gives you a course score for running, but in my opinion, it doesn’t give enough credit for uphill running. Is anyone aware of any other “established” ways of getting a course running score?

Well you 've probably seen that the original posting was a while ago. If you want, you can check the formula pool in the calculate fields plugin. Every method can be questioned. But i use the course score plugin to compare routes. For me it is sufficient. (but i live in the Netherlands  )

After this said, i 've experienced with a formula bpm/km to compare my effort. Instead of the route. Don't know if this is scientifically investigated, and don't care either actually  , but it gives an indication. Like the course score plugin gives an indication.

succes

I have been finding out a bit more about this. You can use Naismith’s rule to calculate a course difficulty score:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naismith's_rule
http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02640410600874906#.UukMr9hFCHs
Easy to do with the calculated fields plugin, simply distance + 7.92*ascent. For my hill runs, it shows a higher correlation with running time than the course score in the course score plugin does, suggesting that it is on the right track. However, Naismith’s rule assumes that you start and finish at the same height, so it is potentially less accurate when this isn’t the case. I found an article that suggests a quartic function to calculate course difficulty which should be better, but I’ll need some more time to implement this in calculated fields:
