Adding an image to your post

Postby DavidCHall » Sun Aug 31, 2008 11:23 am

Question:

How do I add an image to my forum post?

Answer:

Get an image file:

1. Capture an image with your favourite screen capture and graphics editor: There are plenty of excellent free and paywhere applications that will do this for you.

If you are using vanilla Windows XP you can always use the "PrntScrn" key, and paste (Cntrl V) this into MS Paint.

2. Ideally to image you wish to post should be a .jpg file.

3. Make sure the image is of reasonable dimension: About 600 X 400 is ideal: Too large and it will make the post difficult to read (the image should fit in the default text area of a 1024X768 screen). Too small and the message will be lost for lack of detail.

Upload your image file:

Upload your image to a web server using whichever methods the service provider supports: Typically "FTP". You may also use an image hosting service: PhotoBucket or FlickR

Link your post to the image file:

Use the format
Code: Select all

in your post.

Which will produce something like this:

Image

NB: There is a quirk were this doesn't work if the filename has spaces or some other special characters: Suggest you stick to vanilla file names...

Question:

How can I read the forums using an RSS reader?

Answer:

Every forum and topic in the SportTracks forums publishes an ATOM feed of posts. ATOM is like RSS, but different. :) Most modern browsers and syndication readers should handle both ATOM and RSS.

When you are on a webpage that has ATOM feeds (such as these forums), the RSS button in your browser toolbar will be enabled, allowing you to select a specific news feed. Just click the button to subscribe to the feed. Below are examples of what you will see in Internet Explorer:

and Firefox:

Other readers will have different methods of subscribing to the feeds. If you need to manually enter a feed URL, you can look at the source for the forum webpage and pull it out as the example below shows:

Code: Select all
<link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title="Feed - SportTracks" href="http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/sporttracks/forums/feed.php" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title="Feed - News" href="http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/sporttracks/forums/feed.php?mode=news" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title="Feed - All forums" href="http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/sporttracks/forums/feed.php?mode=forums" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title="Feed - New Topics" href="http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/sporttracks/forums/feed.php?mode=topics" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title="Feed - Active Topics" href="http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/sporttracks/forums/feed.php?mode=topics_active" />
<link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title="Feed - Forum - Announcements" href="http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/sporttracks/forums/feed.php?f=1" />
