Google Maps - Set up instructions for non-watermarked maps

Postby admin » Tue Aug 21, 2018 2:28 pm

Google recently changed their terms of use policy for API mapping use, dropping the number of free map API use by 30x times, increasing pay fee for overuse by 1400%, and instituting a "development only" watermark for software that uses the API without an API key such as the ST3 Windows app. To accommodate these changes we have updated the ST3 app to allow licensed users to enter their registered map API key to remove the Google Maps watermark.

What this means for you:

If you want to continue using Google Maps in ST3 without a watermark you need to take the following steps:

1. Update your ST3 software to the latest release v3.1.6807 here: Download ST3 Updates
2. Register with Google for a API key following the steps here: Get API Key, be sure to get a key for "Maps JavaScript Api"
3. Once you receive your API key, enter the key into the ST3 app under the Settings > Google Maps > API Key box.
4. Restart the app, you now have non-watermarked Google Maps.

The new Google Maps terms allow up to 25,000 map uses per month for free, which should accommodate the needs of any ST3 user... unless they don't have a job or something and spend all their time looking at ST3 workouts. KEEP YOUR API KEY PRIVATE AND DO NOT GIVE IT TO ANYONE. Allowing someone else to access your key could result in API usage abuse, overage charges, or blocking by Google. If you believe your API key has been stolen, you can use the Google Maps API management website to create a new one. You may also want to set API limits to ensure your monthly use is under the free tier. You can do all this in the Google API console web site, or read these instructions to Manage Your Cost of Use and set your usage limits.

Wow, that is a lot of work. I really don't want to do all that. What are my options?

1. Continue to use the Google Maps option in the development only watermarked mode. API access rate limiting for software without an API key seems to work off IP address ranges and a daily use count. If you access the software in the morning, or live in an area without a lot of other maps users, you may not notice this at all.

2. Switch to Open Street Maps. Install the plugin here: ST3 Open Street Map Plugin to access 5 different types of background maps from You will need an API key to unlock the non-watermarked maps from thunderforest as well; the process is explained in the plugin page.
