New plugin: Nike+ Plugin

New plugin: Nike+ Plugin

Postby old_man_biking » Thu Mar 11, 2010 12:02 pm

Nike has created a clever and affordable tool for runners: the Nike+ pedometer.
All you need is the Nike+ sensor for your running shoe and either a Nike+ wrist band or an iPod nano, iPod touch or iPhone. See http://nikerunning.nike.com/nikeplus for details.

I've created a plugin that allows you to load runs recorded with a Nike+ into SportTracks.
Please see the plugin home page for details.

Wow, pretty slick. You even noted the playlist I used.

Yes, I've surfaced for a few minutes to test.

Couple of notes:
- Took me a bit before I figured out that the nike website is accessed through "devices." So simple and logical but not obvious to some of us slower folks.
- It's not a pedometer; it's an accelerometer* (I know, picky, picky, but someone will call you on it anyway. :roll: )
- When I imported the runs, I entered the name of the activity, but I'm not sure it stuck. Maybe I can retest by deleting and re-importing?
- I had to enter my email, not my nike username, to access my nike account.

* Actually, a piezoelectric accelerometer whatever the heck that is!

Thanks so much! Off to post on nike's forum. :D

I've just uploaded a new version with a few bug fixes:

Code: Select all
* FIXED: in certain situations the plugin downloaded empty activities, i.e. without a pace track
         this should be fixed now
* FIXED: when you entered a name for the activity in the activity selection dialog, it was silently
         overwritten by the plugin; this is now fixed
* FIXED: reduced the timeout for access to NikeRunning.com, so that ST won't be blocked too long,
        when the website doesn't respond properly

Thanks, SadieKate, for pointing me to the 2nd one. Thanks as well for your "ad" in the Nike forum.
Btw, to be exact: SportTracks is NOT open source software :?: Maybe you can edit your post in the Nike forum.

Cheers,
OMB

Nike+ provides a really cute, cheap, light device ideal for runners.

Yes: It's designed for Nike shoe. But actually works with any shoe.

Using this plugin you can now bring the data into ST, and gain further as follows: {Apart from the fact that data is now local, and ST has much better activity records than the Nike+ web offers}

# Use "Apply Routes" to add route data to your activity.
# Use "Elevation Correction" to add elevation data to your activity. (Once you have a route defined of course)
# Use GPSPowerTrack to add weather data. (Once you have a route defined of course)

Might be ideal if it would measure correct. As per several reports and tests I have read its about 4-5% wrong.

Yes, I've heard this...

Correctly installed, on the right shoe it's a bit more accurate: But for the price even 5% error isn't too bad: It's still a great way to log your runs with some accountability: Better than 100% error: ie No log at all which is the alternative for many...

Sure its good for some fun, but if someone trains with it 5% more ore less speed is a world of difference! :evil: actually 2 worlds :lol:

High, new to the forum. Can someone tell me how to use the Nike Plug plug-in? I've downloaded it and want to import my wife's stuff from Nike Plus but cannot figure out how to do it in the SportTracks software. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There should be two ways to do this:

1. Download to SportTracks from the Nike+ web site. {I've only ever used this method}
2. Download direct from the Nike device.

Steps are: {This is to download from the Nike+ web site: I don't have a Nike device so am unsure of the procedure to import directly from the device: Maybe you can add this for others to use}

1. With SportTracks not running install the Nike+ plugin: I assume you have already done this.
2. Upload you runs from your Nike device to the Nike+ web site as usual.
3. Run SportTracks.
4. From the Daily Activity view select import.
5. Select Device (not file): Select Nike+ {Nike Running.com}
6. Enter your Nike+ user name (usually your email address) and password.
7. You should now be able to select and import activities as usual.

Once you have the activity data you may consider: {Each step depends on the previous}

1. Create a Route in the Routes view and (using Apply Routes) apply this to your activity to create location based data.
2. Use GDAL and Elevation Correction to add elevation to your data. {Only dependant on a valid route}
3. Use GPSPowerTrack to add weather data. {Only dependant on a valid route}
3. Consider using GPSPowerTrack to add a power track to your data. (Which means you can also use Training Analysis) {Requires a route and elevation}

I am starting to get an expiration notice for this plug-in. Will it cease working after July 1?

This appears to still be a problem. The names keep getting dropped.

Sure.

From the Activity Reports view:
* Select Import
* Select nikerunning.nike.com
* Select Next >
* Enter my nikerunning.com password
* Select an item (just one but the same thing happens if I choose more than 1) to import
* Select Next >
* Make sure "Create new activity" is selected
* Enter Category, Weather, Equipment, Location and Name
* Select Finish

The record gets added but Name is blank.

If I do the equivalent for my Garmin 310XT, Name is kept which suggests it is the Nike+ plug-in rather than the base ST3.

It works like a charm on my ST3 installation.
Are you using ST2 or ST3?

Works like a charm on my PC - although I'm importing local files, not from a Nike+ account.
Maybe I've fixed this without being aware of, now. The last weeks have been a bit busy.

Please send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you a dev. version to try out.

Cheers,

Any chance to grab the GPS data from the new Nike+ GPS app as well? The details from Nike look like standard GPX format with additional info wrapped in a json.

It's an iPhone app, right?
Where does it store the data? Upload to Nike+, file on the iPhone, ...?

upload to Nike+

it is stored in 2 locations, one is the same xml file as the Nike+, the other is a json that you can access like this:

http://nikerunning.nike.com/nikeplus/v2/services/app/get_gps_detail.jsp?_plus=true&id=1572842541&format=json

the number is of cause the number of the run.

P.s.: No comments about my pace pleaser, I just started running again :wink:

Ok,

this doesn't look too difficult.
To add this, I'd however need someone who owns the Nike+ app and would be willing to allow me access to his/her Nike+ account for developing and testing.

If you know such a daring person, send me a PM please :)

I've just uploaded a new version of the plugin that supports the Nike+ GPS iPhone app (recording of GPS tracks).

Thanks to Xiaoan for helping with the development of this.
